Field Trip to P66 HQ

A few weeks ago, during the summer session of the MME program, my fellow MME class and I had the chance to visit the Phillips 66 headquarters in Houston. We had the opportunity to see the P66 trading desk where we participated in a crude oil trading competition called Crude Pursuits.

The competition was exciting as it pitted us against each other and the clock to see who could get the best value for their crude oil shipment. Crude Pursuits gave us a taste of what it would be like as a physical trader. It requires a lot of thinking on your feet and quick decision making as there are many moving parts in a deal. For me, the competition illustrated to me that I did not want to be a trader. I found this of equal value as if I decided that I did want to be a trader.

All things considered, I would highly recommend the Houston Field trip to the future MME classes. It is a great time to get to know your classmates, network with several great companies, and get a feel for the center of the energy sector.
